    Speakers/Topics/Objectives to include but not limited to:

    Medical Board Reporting/Medical Board Enforcement - Kimberly Kirchmeyer, Executive Director, MBOC
    • Become familiar with the Board’s structure and role.
    • Understand how to verify a licensee’s profile information.
    • Understand 805 and 805.01 reporting requirements.
    • Discuss helpful hints on licensing and enforcement processes.
    • Become familiar with new laws impacting physicians.

    The Appropriate Care Committee - Shelley Carder, Esq.
    • After participating in this program, attendees will be introduced to the legal concepts of futile care, the essential elements of an appropriate care policy and the extent of immunities for participants in such decisions.
    • Attendees will learn about the case of Alexander v. Scripps Memorial Hospital and the legal principles discussed in that decision.
    • Suggestions will be offered for bylaw provisions for appropriate care and also other recently identified bylaw  improvements.

    Handling the Disruptive or Dishonest Physician - From Credentialing to Peer Review – Jennifer Hansen, Esq.
    • Attendees will review case studies relating to omissions or misstatements on applications (including Powell v. Bear Valley; Ellison v. Sequoia Health; Oskooi v. Fountain Valley) and discuss credentialing tips to address the dishonest applicant.
    • Attendees will review the Joint Commission Standards relating to disruptive behaviors that undermine a culture of safety and the AMA Model Medical Staff Code of Conduct.
    • Practical guidance will be offered for dealing with the dishonest or disruptive physician, including due process considerations.

    Protecting Peer Review Information-Access to and Sharing of Peer Review Information/ Confidentiality/Immunities - Anna Suda, Esq.
    • Understand when, where and who can assess medical staff documents.
    • Practical guidelines for sharing peer review information with other healthcare entities.
    • Identify legal mistakes physicians make in peer review process and how to protect your committee members.
    • Identify peer review immunities and confidentiality laws.

    Dr. Death: Credentialing Gone Wrong - Erin Muellenberg. Esq., CPMSM
    • Identify at least one barrier to the sharing of information from training programs.
    • Identify one red flag in Dr. Duntsch’s credentialing.
    • Identify one response to a red flag with Dr. Duntsch.

    Panel Discussion - (Anna Suda, Shelley Carder & Erin Muellenberg)
    • Identify and evaluate participant’s real life medical staff issues and discuss ways to address.
    • Vetting process for Medical Staff Officers and leaders.
    • Identify when to update Medical Staff Bylaws.
