THE MINDEL SPIEGEL SCHOLARSHIP

Education has always been the main focus of the California Association Medical Staff Services. Accordingly, in 1988, the CAMSS Board of Directors, established an Education Committee to identify the educational needs of the Association membership. In addition, a scholarship award program was created to provide financial assistance to CAMSS members and individuals enrolled, or planning to enroll, in a college or university program specific to allied health sciences. Since 1988, fourteen CAMSS members or individuals have been awarded five hundred dollars to further their personal and professional growth and enhance their knowledge and competence in the field of medical staff services.

In May of 2002, at the Annual CAMSS Education Conference in Palm Springs, CAMSS members and conference attendees honored Mindel Spiegel, M.D., a physician consultant with the California Department of Health Services. Throughout the many years we have known Dr. Spiegel, she has unselfishly offered her expertise and shared her precise understanding of California regulatory standards. A frequent presenter and speaker at California regulatory programs, professional association conferences and workshops, Dr. Spiegel has also become an invaluable resource and true friend to the California Association Medical Staff Services and its membership. While Dr. Spiegel has retired from the Department of Health, she is continues to be a formidable presence as a consultant and speaker. It is more than apparent that she shares our commitment to education; and, therefore, it seemed eloquently fitting that the annual CAMSS scholarship award was renamed the Mindel Spiegel Scholarship in 2002.

The Mindel Spiegel Scholarship continues as a monetary award and will be awarded for the first time this May in Santa Barbara during the Annual Business Meeting and Luncheon.

For over thirty years, the ongoing focus of the California Association Medical Staff Services . . . and an integral part of our mission statement . . . is supporting the professional development of our membership. As financial support of education by our membership’s employers continue to decline; the cost of education continues to rise while reimbursement for continuing education is almost non-existent, CAMSS believes the Mindel Spiegel Scholarship is an unique opportunity for receiving assistance in supporting educational endeavors and achieving career goals.
