Given the anticipated sell-out of the room block at the Disneyland Resort, we ask that you pay your registration as soon as possible.  In order to ensure that room block is used for paid forum registrants, if you select "Pay by check" for the forum registration and payment has not been received by May 8th, your Disneyland resort reservation may be subject to cancellation.   • Hospitals are suffering their worst financial year since the pandemic began according to an article published by the American Hospital Association, and things are not likely to improve in the near future. Increased revenue stream is an essential goal and top priority for healthcare organizations collectively. Departments that are generally non-revenue generating, such as health system CVOs and Medical Staff Offices (MSOs) have an opportunity to positively contribute to improved revenue stream. This presentation will explore options for becoming a revenue-generating CVO or MSO, including contract language, regulatory compliance, staffing levels, and fee structures.

  • Disruptive behavior and sexual harassment complaints against practitioners usually involve both the hospital human resources and the medical staff. It is often the case that one complaint made against a practitioner will land on the director of human resource's desk, on the medical staff director’s desk, or both. This program will discuss strategies that the medical staff and human resources can employ in investigating a complaint against a practitioner. This program will also discuss when a joint investigation is necessary, and how to conduct one. Most importantly, this program will discuss how the medical staff can investigate the complaint and share information with human resources without compromising Section 1157 protection.

  • Initial and focused proctoring is an important tool for evaluating practitioner competence and quality care. At times, however, it may be difficult for practitioners to complete initial proctoring. Focused proctoring is also important but may trigger mandatory reporting obligations and hearing rights. Medical staff professionals attending this session will gain a better understanding of these and other proctoring pitfalls and identify strategies for how to address or avoid them.

  • This session will provide an in-depth view of the new 103 and 104 Nurse Practitioner laws and the move toward practice independence in both the hospital and the community. The Board of Registered Nursing has issued regulations for Nurse Practitioners and applications for 103 NPs are being processed and approved. Learn the details of the expanded NP practice and legal constraints to that practice along with the Medical Staff’s responsibility for the NP’s practice.

    This session will also address The Joint Commission’s change of OPPE to 12 months and the extension of reappointments from 2 years to 3 years. We will look at whether Title 22 will allow for the change and then if the change is made what it means for your organization’s governing documents.

  • The payor enrollment process can take six months or longer for commercial payors. It is a time-consuming process that creates barriers to practitioner onboarding and revenue generation. This creates issues with access to care and, ultimately, patient safety. Delegated credentialing simplifies the enrollment process by allowing health care organizations to control the credentialing and approval process. This presentation will review how payor enrollment and delegated credentialing affect revenue cycle. Focus will be given on the benefits of delegated credentialing and steps to effectively implement a delegation agreement.

  • Once the Medical Board becomes aware of a complaint about a physician, a series of events take place that effect the physician. But, actions by the Medical Board also impact the medical staff as well. Join Rebecca Hoyes for a discussion of reporting requirements under the Business and Professions Code and an overview of the Medical Board enforcement process. Ms. Hoyes will also address strategies for how the medical staff should respond when it receives a subpoena from the Medical Board or notice that a member or applicant is subject to an investigation, an accusation, or a decision that limits their ability to practice.

  • It goes without saying that physicians play a pivotal role in the healthcare system not only in terms of care delivery but also in terms of their impact on the teams within which they work to deliver that care. Beyond the “formal authority” that physicians bring to their work, their behavior has the power to exert influence across all layers of the organizational chart, for better or for worse. Dr. Searles explores common examples of dysfunctional behavior in physicians along with key concepts and tools to better understand and manage challenging behaviors among physician staff. This interactive presentation is designed to highlight the specific challenges faced when leaders work to manage dysfunctional engagement and disruptive behavior in healthcare.   • The news is full of health care providers and imposters who have committed crimes, including fraud, intentional or gross negligent acts causing severe harm, sexual assault, murder and a variety of other crimes. In recent years there have been a flurry of documentaries and true crime stories about these medical criminals. This program will highlight some of these individuals and discuss how they were able to work in the system without detection for years. We will discuss the role of credentialing and peer review in early intervention and detection of these individuals along with practical strategies for protecting patients and others.

  • There are a lot of moving parts when peer review and corrective action processes are underway. Ensuring a fair, objective process is essential when it comes to defending a corrective action or recommendation at a hearing. This presentation will help you develop a short list of tips and reminders to consult during such a process to increase the likelihood that the action is not easily challenged on procedural grounds.

What are the red flags used to identify these people and how is it that they are allowed to continue employment even while under suspicion? What has been the role of management when these allegations surface and how are these people finally brought to justice. This session will identify medical serials killers around the world including some who are currently on trial or have been identified in the media as under investigation.

    1. How medical serial killers can obtain and often keep employment for long periods of time at hospitals while killing patients with seeming impunity.
    2. How medical serial killers can move from hospital to hospital and keep killing even while under suspicion
    3. What makes these people tick, how are they able to fool staff and patients
